Hello, my name is Nellie Errett and I am a journalist that focuses in writing about the Arts in the Charlotte, N.C. area. I study at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, majoring in Communications with a concentration in Public Relations, while double-minoring in Journalism and Political Science. At the university I also contribute work to both Kappa Delta Sorority and MIDAS magazine. I am so excited to present my work and continue developing my career.

FEATURE WRITING
This assignment was a podcast with a correlating script, along with a video that included another aspect of storytelling. The podcast topic was to discuss something we are passionate about, and I chose dance. I brainstormed stories, experiences, and feelings revolving around my life and dance, and compiled old videos of my dancing for a video. I wrote a script that would guide my podcast, which can also be used as a transcript for the audio.
This profile feature is an in-depth story based on a person I found interesting. Profile features are meant for the audience to get to know a subject through a story based on research and interviewing. Interviewing the subject, along with two of her loved ones, provided insight on her thoughts, feelings, and personal life. Research of her personal LinkedIn showed her previous professional experiences. This assignment included an article about my subject, and a edited short video clip of our interview.
Place features are similar to profile features; however, the in-depth story is based on a place I found interesting, rather than a person. These stories can create a narrative about a place. Two interviews were conducted for this feature, both being visitors of the area. This gave a human's perspective of the place that wasn't just my own. Extensive research of the area and it's history added a contextual element to the story as well. This assignment includes an article, short video, and photography from the place.
This essay is a reflection and self-assessment on the JOUR 3162 course I took in my Fall 2025 semester, titled "Feature Writing." This course has taught me about creativity and in-depth reporting on a subject in journalistic writing.
MINI FEATURE PROFILES
The purpose of mini features is to gain interviewing skills, along with practicing feature writing in AP style. In these assignments, we were provided prompts to ask people, and develop a story with an angle that shares that person's narrative. I personally reached out to individuals who I felt would be passionate about sharing their stories related to each prompt.
